A Quinnipiac University Poll of Ohio voters released last week showed that exactly the same percentage (44) have an unfavorable view of Clinton as have a favorable view. Almost as many (41 percent) said they would never vote for her.Her name is frequently used to generate votes and donations -- for Republicans. In fact, she often is portrayed as the one candidate who could unify a fractured Republican Party, especially conservative Christians who don't have an obvious GOP standard-bearer.Clinton's defenders say she is viewed as "polarizing" because she's the front-runner, the first woman with a realistic chance of becoming president, and right-wingers have been attacking her for 15 years.Clinton's lightning-rod status shows up even in nonpolitical settings. A Parent magazine survey this month deemed her the presidential candidate parents would most trust to watch their children -- and the candidate they would least trust.Can any presidential candidate with such high negatives win?That's a question that John Edwards, former North Carolina senator, and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama are expected to emphasize more and more in the next 50 days before the nation's first primary votes are cast in Iowa and New Hampshire. Although this increasingly intense campaign won't take place in Ohio, it will be all about states such as Ohio as Clinton's rivals try to make the case that she couldn't win a general election.
