The truth is, however, that this PR tactic represents a variation upon Bill Clinton’s “meaning of is trick” — that is, getting the public to fixate upon an irrelevant (or perfectly stupid) detail instead of considering the big picture: in this case, a picture that is Clintonian to the core, including Hillary Clinton’s shameless portrayal of herself as a victim. (In Nevada, she said she is “personally offended” by charges of racism as she exclusively placed blame for the “race flap” on the Obama campaign.) The trick hasn’t fooled black voters and many black leaders such as Representative James E. Clyburn of South Carolina. Neither have other Americans succumbed to this Clintonian duplicity, certainly not Dick Morris, the former Clinton insider who immediately after Iowa warned Bill O’Reilly’s audience to expect Hillary Clinton to launch coded racist attacks against Obama. Sadly, however, the trick has fooled many commentators (including Mr. O’Reilly) who have taken to distinguishing themselves as “voices of reason” by arguing, for example, that a scrutiny of Bill Clinton’s use of “fairy tale” proves the former president intended the term to apply only to Mr. Obama’s record on Iraq.So, to get the full picture and decide this question for ourselves, let’s first establish the facts in their full context and then consider what the Clintons are asking us to believe:
