"(W)e need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime. We all know the litany of his offenses. He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation. ...And now he is miscalculating America s response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction. That is why the world, through the United Nations Security Council, has spoken with one voice, demanding that Iraq disclose its weapons programs and disarm. So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real, but it is not new. It has been with us since the end of the Persian Gulf War." -- John Kerry, Jan 23, 2003

By James WilesToo bad for Hillary she's not running for president of the Russian Federation. At the moment, however, the collapse of Team Hill's attempt to turn the Democrat Party into the Hillary Party is proceeding apace. It didn't take long. And the voting hasn't even started yet.On Oct. 30, I wrote here that "it's beginning to occur to Democrats that they can lose the 2008 election." That night at the Democrat debate here in Philadelphia, Mrs. Clinton muffed a question about drivers-licenses-for-illegals and promptly got called on it by three Irish guys (Christopher Dodd, Joe Biden and Tim Russert) and the Honorable Barack Obama, all of whom know a double-talking pol (in Hillary's case, triple-talking) when they see one. A highly enjoyable firestorm ensued, in which Team Hill (and Team Bill) blamed everyone except themselves. On Nov. 6, I said here, "Well, now we know how to beat her." Apparently, so does she. First, Mrs. Clinton told poor Katie Couric that, no, she'd never actually thought about the possibility of losing the nomination. Then, former President Clinton told a stunned audience that he'd been against the Iraq war "from the beginning." This was too much even for MSNBC's Chris Matthews, who called in to Morning Joe to compare Mr. Clinton's latest mendacity to his famous insistence that "I did not have sex with that woman, Miss Lewinsky."On Sunday night, Mrs. Clinton committed the political equivalent of compounding a felony (or a fracture) by denouncing Mr. Obama for being of bad character. This is like Heidi Fleiss calling someone a "loose woman." "Hi, I'm Hillary. Remember all that bad stuff you know about me that you'd put out of your mind because you wanted so badly to beat the Republicans?"If the present trend continues, it'll soon be Hillary's candidacy that requires a "willing suspension of disbelief."Somewhere in Iraq, Gen. Petraeus is chortling.
