Hillary Clinton will seek to stabilise her presidential campaign this weekend after the worst week so far in her attempt to win the Democratic nomination.The New York senator has come under pressure after her first real campaign stumble during a Democratic presidential debate in Philadelphia on Tuesday.Mrs Clinton has faced ridicule from across the political spectrum for her ambiguous answer to a question about whether illegal immigrants should be granted drivers’ licences.Barack Obama and John Edwards, the other main Democratic contenders, have seized on the gaffe to reinforce their criticism that Mrs Clinton dodges tough issues and puts political calculation ahead of principle.“It’s clear that the tenor of the campaign has changed this week,” said Andrew Polsky, political science professor at Hunter College in New York. “Obama and Edwards realised that playing nice wasn’t working. They needed to try derailing the frontrunner.”While Mrs Clinton remains ahead in opinion polls, this week’s turbulence has dented the sense of invincibility that had built around her campaign.Mrs Clinton, bidding to become the first woman US president, has used her gender to help contain the damage from Tuesday’s debate.
