Only Hillary unites the GOP
By: Grace VuotoHillary has a unique standing among Republicans and among conservatives at large. The right-wing in America might disagree on which GOP candidate should be their nominee, on which issues are a priority in 2008 and on which Democrat is most palatable. By: Grace VuotoHillary has a unique standing among Republicans and among conservatives at large. The right-wing in America might disagree on which GOP candidate should be their nominee, on which issues are a priority in 2008 and on which Democrat is most palatable. However, there is little doubt there is one candidate who unifies an otherwise fractured conservative movement: Hillary Clinton. For many of those on the right of the political spectrum, a Hillary nominee is both the best case scenario and the worst case scenario. It is the best case scenario in so far as her candidacy unites the right to take action in a campaign; the base will be mobilized in a manner unlike any other candidate and unlike any other issue. There is a ferocity and fervor among her opponents which will turn into a tidal wave of activity if she is nominated. Without her, the GOP will remain deeply divided and more easily defeated.A Clinton candidacy is also the worst case scenario for those who are on the right wing of the political spectrum because it will force them to do what many would prefer to avoid: debate the 1990’s, expose the shoddy Clinton personal and professional practices, assault her character and integrity, swim in the underworld of the personal lives of the Clintons—in other words, many on the right would, like many on the left, simply prefer to move forward and let sleeping dogs lie. But a Hillary candidacy will make this impossible. Why is Senator Clinton so despised? Is it because, as she claims, she is very effective on the issues? The answer is no. In fact, even other candidates who have a more liberal record like Mr. Obama draw warmer feelings from conservative commentators and activists. Senator Clinton is despised mostly because she is perceived to be a degrading influence on American politics. It is not her support of Democratic or liberal issues which is feared: it is her utter disregard for truth, her sleazy tactics, and her use of private investigators against her opponents. These practices threaten the health of the American republic. In other words, the Clintons are perceived as corrosive to the very sinews of democracy. Stopping them becomes a patriotic mission, not merely a political one.
