Kennedy Friday to defend her decision to remain in the race until June 3 - sparking a wave of condemnation by Barack Obama's supporters.Clinton quickly expressed regrets over the unprompted reference to the slain New York senator, interpreted by many in Obama's camp as a suggestion she thinks his life might be endangered.

Kennedy Friday to defend her decision to remain in the race until June 3 - sparking a wave of condemnation by Barack Obama's supporters.Clinton quickly expressed regrets over the unprompted reference to the slain New York senator, interpreted by many in Obama's camp as a suggestion she thinks his life might be endangered.Clinton, who has made similar statements in the past, said she was simply illustrating that past nominating contests have dragged into June, after being asked by editors of the Sioux Falls, S.D., Argus Leader why she remained in the race."My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right?" Clinton told the newspaper. "We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California."Clinton added that she didn't "understand" people who want her to drop out, according to a video on the paper's Web site.Clinton made no direct reference to Obama in her RFK comments. But Michelle Obama, the candidate's wife, has said she is worried about the dangers he faces as a pioneering African-American presidential hopeful. Obama was given Secret Service protection last May, which was earlier than any previous candidate.The comments came amid reports that Bill Clinton and other backers were pushing the possibility of an Obama-Clinton unity ticket. Both campaigns vehemently denied discussions are taking place over the vice presidency - Hillary Clinton called it "flatly, completely untrue" - although neither camp denied such talks would occur in the future.Obama staffers have quietly dismissed the possibility of a joint ticket even as it has gained traction with high-profile Clinton backers, including former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell and California Sen. Dianne Feinstein.
