Hillary Clinton the combat veteran, a role in the race we thought had been reserved for Sen. John McCain, her potential Republican rival. The inexplicable blunder -- desperation? delusion? disregard for the truth? -- of Mrs. Clinton claiming she had landed in Bosnia under sniper fire a dozen years ago has her running for president as a spin doctor and damage control expert, as if there weren't more than enough of them already. How does she explain her way out of such a statement?This one is so bad, in fact, that Mrs. Clinton the comedian has made a late entrance into the race."I made a mistake," she said Tuesday. "That happens. It proves I'm human, which, you know, for some people is a revelation."It's quite telling that such a perpetually on-message candidate like Mrs. Clinton is trying to joke her way out of what might be seen as a gaffe, albeit a potentially serious one, within her own campaign but as nothing short of a lie within rival quarters.Just imagine the TV ads that Mr. McCain, or even Sen. Barack Obama, could launch in Mrs. Clinton's direction. Now that would be its own sort of sniper fire, and then some.
