"I will be voting to give the President of the United States the authority to use force -- if necessary -- to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security."-- Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Oct. 9, 2002

Hit and Miss Hillary
Desipte Hillary Clinton's claim that her Democratic presidential opponents were "piling on" against her during October's Philadelphia debate, most Americans disagree. Considering her performance during Thursdays' Las Vegas debate, it appears that Mrs. Clinton is senstive to this perception and has toughened up. But it seems she's still playing the gender card and hasn't realized the damsel-in-distress syndrome won't fly with voters.

But it seems she's still playing the gender card and hasn't realized the damsel-in-distress syndrome won't fly with voters.A Fox 5/Washington Times/Rasmussen Reports poll conduced last week found 57 percent of Americans disagree with the Clinton campaign's assertion that her fellow Democrats were "piling on" and attacking her unfairly in Philadelphia. Eighteen percent said they were not sure what to make of the claim and just 25 percent said they agreed with Mrs. Clinton's assessment.Of those who said the attacks amounted to "piling on," 44 percent said she was a target because she is a woman and 45 percent said it's because she's the frontrunner. Stratifying by gender, the poll of 1,000 adults conducted Nov. 6-7 found that 47 percent of women felt that her gender was an impetus for the attacks, while just 40 percent of men agreed. Clearly, most Americans at this point don't want to see a male candidate hiding behind his spouse's petticoats than they would a female candidate hiding behind her hubby's breeches (Bill Clinton claimed this week that "those boys have been getting tough on her lately"). We all know Mrs. Clinton is no shy violet, so it seemed slightly out of character when, during her recent trip to her alma mater, Wellesley College, she posited that her time at the women's school "prepared me to compete in the all-boys' club of presidential politics."
