I know on September 11, we were all evacuated from the building, and we found ourselves standing outside—most of us. I was whisked away with no place to go. We ended up on the top floor of the police headquarters. We pulled the shades down, thinking that might make us more secure.

By Anne Davies In the cavernous barrel-vaulted space of Union Station in Washington DC, John Grisham looks positively small as he bounds on stage to introduce the star billing of the night, Hillary Rodham Clinton."First let me say thank you for bringing your chequebooks," the author says. "We are spending obscene amounts of money in this race, because everyone else is, too. This could be the most expensive campaign in history. We've raised over $1 million tonight and that means we can continue to campaign in every state in the nation."That's it from Grisham. He crumples up his planned speech. Senator Clinton has run late and proceedings are an hour and a quarter behind schedule. Some parents who brought their children to the event at $US1200 ($1400) a ticket have given up.Suddenly, there she is on stage. She is made up for the harsh lights and her hair is styled in the casual but controlled style she now favours.Clinton takes the microphone and soon she's away: walking the stage, shoulders back, her voice beguiling one minute, outraged the next as she touches on the damage that George Bush has wrought on America. It's a sales pitch that asks her audience to get on board with her vision: a fairer America, an America where everyone has health care, and an America that is respected around the world.
