Hillary's Candidacy: What Would Orwell Think?
By: Ercille I. Christmas A few days ago, I read an article about the unfitness of Hillary Clinton to lead our country, especially in a time of war. The word “unfit” jumped out at me. Did the author mean out-of-shape and flabby? Unqualified? Incompetent? I rejected “out of shape and flabby” because at least the candidates’ facial muscles get a good work out, talking, as one wag put it, “out of both sides of their mouths!” Unqualified and incompetent were another matter.

I rejected “out of shape and flabby” because at least the candidates’ facial muscles get a good work out, talking, as one wag put it, “out of both sides of their mouths!” Unqualified and incompetent were another matter. The writer of the article, Joan Swirsky, spoke about the preeminence of “safety first,” ahead of many other considerations in our daily existence. She linked this issue to the inability of Hillary to place national safety/security ahead of her personal ambition. I am all for politicians pursuing personal ambition, especially if it coincides with my own personal safety and goals. In Hillary’s case, it appears there is a big chasm. The article also raised the alarm about Hillary’s flip-flopping on issues of national importance. As I read more, I began to wonder how George Orwell of “Animal Farm” fame would have seen this candidate and the various positions she has taken on any number of important foreign and domestic policies. Would he have seen another animal allegory? Would he have seen a spider/web-like entrapment and unwelcome presence in the “safety/security zone” of my personal safety and, more important, to the security of the U.S.? I could be personally safe, but if the country as a whole is not, because a politician serves up waffles on a plate, my fellow countrymen-and-women and I could end up being toast!
