 Hillary Says Petraeus Lied About Iraq Surge
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton accused Gen. David Petraeus of intentionally exaggerating the success of the Iraq surge and predicted the military situation was unlikely to improve despite his efforts."I think the reports that you provide to us really require the willing suspension of disbelief," said Clinton, who opposed the deployment of 30,000 new ground troops earlier this year."Any fair reading of the advantages and disadvantages accruing post-surge, in my view, ends up on the down side," she told Petraeus as the general's marathon testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee was nearing its end.

Clinton also questioned Petraeus' claim that the surge had persuaded tribal leaders in western Iraq to turn on al-Qaida.
"In your testimony during your confirmation hearing [in January], you referred to the fact that the sheiks were coming over, that there was already a decision by a lot of the tribal leaders that they would no longer tolerate the extreme brutality of al-Qaida elements," Clinton said.
