Democratic Sen. Chris Dodd's campaign said Monday that Hillary Rodham Clinton is misstating the facts when she argues that she voted to step up diplomacy with Iran. Clinton's campaign said the accusation is political gamesmanship that misconstrues her position. The New York senator has said she voted in favor of declaring Iran's Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization to encourage diplomacy. Dodd, a senator from Connecticut, voted against the measure last month, arguing that President Bush could interpret it as authorization for military action. Clinton's presidential rivals have increasingly been using her vote against her. The criticism prompted Clinton to mail an explanation to Iowa voters in which she said her position was "clearly a vote for stepped-up diplomacy." On Monday, Dodd campaign spokeswoman Colleen Flanagan said Clinton was wrong. "It is simply factually not the case that the legislation, as Senator Clinton voted for it, contained any requirement of diplomacy with Iran whatsoever," Flanagan said. "That provision was stripped from the bill as passed, and the Clinton campaign is either unaware of or is simply ignoring that inconvenient fact."
