Her victory on Super Tuesday had been assured by the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Terry McAuliffe, last summer. The stacked-deck primaries, in fact, were designed to achieve just that. With millions raised and budgeted for the '08 general election, Clinton reached beyond the nomination in the early debates and spoke of the presidency in the assumptive, first-person singular.Her early bravado, however, was short-circuited by the democratic process. Plucked from the virtual world of pundits and polling, Clinton was put down in the real world of primary voters.Here she faced off another slick lawyer, a no-name-recognition novice with little start-up money, who also happened to be black. Having waged two victorious campaigns for the White House, and three others in Arkansas, the co-Clinton juggernaut looked to have her work over the challengers like a pit bull with a rubber duck.
