"Whether one agrees or disagrees with the Administration s policy towards Iraq, I don t think there can be any question about Saddam s conduct. He has systematically violated, over the course of the past 11 years, every significant UN resolution that has demanded that he disarm and destroy his chemical and biological weapons, and any nuclear capacity. This he has refused to do. He lies and cheats; he snubs the mandate and authority of international weapons inspectors; and he games the system to keep buying time against enforcement of the just and legitimate demands of the United Nations, the Security Council, the United States and our allies. Those are simply the facts." -- Henry Waxman, Oct 10, 2002

By Stefanie BaloghHERALD SUN - Hillary Clinton has threatened to invoke the "nuclear option" after Democratic powerbrokers, looking to end the contest, dealt her slim presidential chances a bitter blow.At a heated and emotional meeting, the Democratic Party's rules committee agreed to recognise delegates from the disqualified Michigan and Florida nominating contests, but only at half voting strength.Senator Clinton wanted the Florida and Michigan delegates to be fully recognised, because it would have given her fast-fading White House hopes extra numbers and additional time as she desperately tries to woo super-delegates, made up of party officials and leaders.Instead, the rules committee opted to seat the Florida and Michigan delegates at the party's national convention in August, but only to give them half a vote each. The states were stripped of their delegates for breaking party rules by scheduling their contests early. The decision means the number of delegates that frontrunner Barack Obama now needs to lock in to secure the Democratic presidential nomination is 2118, instead of 2026.With only three contests to go Puerto Rico today (Australian time), and Montana and South Dakota on Wednesday (Australian time) Senator Obama needs roughly 66 delegates to cross the finish line and become the first African-American US presidential nominee.Yesterday's decision means he will likely still be short of the total on Wednesday, but could reach it quickly with the help of some of the 180 superdelegates who remain uncommitted.Sources inside his campaign said there was a co-ordinated push on the weekend to obtain the endorsements of dozens of superdelegates and declare the fight over.Senator Obama plans to travel to Minnesota for a rally on Wednesday, where he's expected to essentially claim a nomination victory.
