About 300 supporters gathered inside the Charleston Civic Center, and they only cheered when cameramen announced upcoming live shots. Campaign aides distributed faux hand-made signs, because few people brought their own. Clinton entered the room a few minutes after 9 p.m. and found it only about three-quarters full.

But Clinton persevered she often has this week: with big smiles and optimism, regardless of the predicament staring back at her."I am so grateful for this overwhelming vote of confidence," she told the crowd. "I am more determined than ever to carry on with this campaign until everyone has had a chance to make their voices heard...This race isn't over yet. Neither of us has the total delegates it takes to win."To reinforce her intent, Clinton immediately asked supporters to donate money on her Web site. Then she turned her victory speech into a job pitch, rattling off a long list of reasons that make her the strongest candidate: She wins in swing states. She won in Florida and Michigan, and those delegates deserve seats at the Democratic Convention. She remains the favorite of "the trucker, the coal miner."
