By Mike LupicaThe elephant in the room for the Democrats should be John McCain. Only it isn't. The elephant in the room remains Hillary Clinton's husband. Bill Clinton came into all this thinking he was still some kind of statesman, despite his administration ending with its pants around its ankles. He comes out of it looking no better than some kind of red-faced sideman for his wife. Maybe Hillary Clinton doesn't want to be on the ticket if she can't be the nominee. But if she wants to be Obama's running mate and isn't, she won't need more polling she can't afford to figure out why. As hard as it is to believe that Barack Obama wants her after the campaign that has been run against him, it is impossible to believe Obama wants her husband. This is as much about him as it is about her. Obama, who has run such a brilliant, grass-roots campaign, is smart enough to know that if you get one, you get both. As just the husband of the vice president, Bill Clinton would make Dick Cheney look like a wallflower in comparison. Barring some sort of miracle, or a fixed fight in Florida and Michigan, Hillary Clinton is going to lose the best shot she will ever have to be the first female President. So, of course, she loses the most here. But her husband, who comes across like the dad who doesn't know when to leave the kids' party, loses almost as much, starting here: that he is the smartest politician of his time. Really? If he is such a brilliant politician, how come he didn't see Obama coming? His wife has already fired Patti Solis Doyle as campaign manager and Mark Penn as her "strategist." But that's like a baseball team firing a couple of coaches instead of the manager.
