In a pair of new Web ads, Hillary Rodham Clinton came under searing attack from rivals in both parties yesterday over her slippery position on whether to give driver's licenses to illegal aliens. In a new commercial from John Edwards' campaign, Clinton is shown repeatedly giving painfully careful and often contradictory answers to questions during the last Democratic debate regarding Iraq, Social Security and immigration.

In the crowning final shot, the screen is divided in four quarters. In each, Clinton gives a different answer to a "yes" or "no" question about whether she supports Gov. Spitzer's plan to give driver's licenses to illegal aliens. With the "Blue Danube" waltz playing in the background, the devastating ad ends with a screen that reads: "We still don't know the answer. That's the politics of parsing."
